PUB Issues Flash Flood Warning as Monsoon Surge Brings Heavy Rains to Singapore

Singapore is set to experience heavy rainfall and cooler temperatures as a monsoon surge arrives between Mar 19 and 21. The Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) has forecasted widespread moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by lower daily minimum temperatures of around 22 degrees Celsius. National water agency PUB has issued a warning about potential flash floods due to intense rainfall overwhelming drainage systems.

Heavy Rains and Cooler Temperatures Expected

The northeast monsoon surge will bring stronger winds over the South China Sea, leading to extensive rain cloud formation. Daily temperatures during this period are expected to range between 24 and 34 degrees Celsius. The overall rainfall for the second half of March is predicted to be above average, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms occurring throughout the month.

Risk of Flash Floods in Low-Lying Areas

PUB has advised the public to stay alert for possible flash floods, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Intense rainfall in a short period may exceed the drainage capacity, leading to temporary flooding. The agency recommends subscribing to its flood alerts and planning travel routes accordingly.

Recent Monsoon Surges in Singapore

Earlier in the year, Singapore experienced a prolonged monsoon surge from Jan 10 to 13, which resulted in flooding at Jalan Seaview and caused flight diversions at Changi Airport. Another surge from Jan 17 to 19 brought continuous heavy rainfall. During that period, Changi recorded 255.2mm of rainfall in just two days, exceeding the average monthly rainfall for January.

La Nina’s Role in Singapore’s Wet Weather

The current rainy conditions are further influenced by La Nina-like weather patterns, which bring wetter and cooler conditions to Southeast Asia. While experts predict that La Nina will weaken and return to neutral by April, Singapore is expected to experience frequent wet spells and stormy weather in the coming months.

How to Stay Safe During Heavy Rainfall

  • Monitor real-time weather updates from MSS and PUB flood alerts.
  • Avoid driving through flood-prone areas during heavy rain.
  • Exercise caution when walking on wet and slippery surfaces.
  • Prepare an emergency kit in case of unexpected flooding.

Conclusion

With the monsoon surge bringing intense rainfall and cooler temperatures to Singapore, residents are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. The combination of northeast monsoon conditions and La Nina-like effects is expected to keep Singapore’s weather wet and unpredictable in the coming weeks. Keep updated
