Muslims in Singapore to Mark the Start of Ramadan on March 2, 2025

Muslims in Singapore will begin observing the holy month of Ramadan on Sunday, March 2, 2025. The official announcement was made by Dr. Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, the Mufti of Singapore, who confirmed the date based on astronomical calculations and the criteria agreed upon by MABIMS (Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore).

According to calculations, the crescent moon was positioned at an angular distance of 5.1 degrees with an altitude of 4.3 degrees at sunset on February 28, 2025. This did not meet the criteria for the new moon’s visibility, meaning that March 1, 2025, marks the 30th day of Syaaban and the completion of the lunar month.

“I am pleased to announce that the first day of fasting for the month of Ramadan falls on Sunday, March 2, 2025,” Dr. Nazirudin stated.

Significance of Ramadan

Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide. It is a time for spiritual reflection, prayer, fasting, and acts of charity. During this month, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn to dusk, focusing on self-discipline, gratitude, and devotion to God.

Zakat Fitrah Rates for 2025

As part of their religious obligation, Muslims in Singapore must pay Zakat Fitrah, a charitable contribution given to the needy. The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) has set the Zakat Fitrah rates for 2025 at $5 or $7.90 per person, depending on the grade of rice consumed.

These rates are determined based on the median price of 2.3kg of normal-grade or premium rice, reflecting the community’s staple food consumption. The two-tier system, introduced in 2005, allows those who consume higher-grade rice, such as Thai Hom Mali, Basmati, and Brown Rice, to contribute accordingly.

How to Pay Zakat Fitrah in Singapore

Muslims in Singapore can pay their Zakat Fitrah through multiple channels, including:

  • Online Payments via the Zakat Singapore website
  • Self-service kiosks available at 49 mosques islandwide
  • AXS stations located across Singapore
  • Cheque payments addressed to MUIS
  • Internet banking transactions

MUIS has advised contributors to remain vigilant against scams and phishing attempts, especially when making online payments.

Importance of Early Zakat Fitrah Payment

While Muslims can pay Zakat Fitrah anytime during Ramadan, it must be completed before the morning of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, which falls on March 31, 2025. To avoid last-minute delays, MUIS encourages early payments to ensure contributions reach those in need on time.

A Message from the Mufti

“On this occasion, I would like to extend my heartfelt wishes to all Muslims in Singapore for a blessed Ramadan. May we take this opportunity to increase our good deeds during this sacred month, and may **God accept our acts of worship, granting us His mercy and forgiveness,” said Dr. Nazirudin Mohd Nasir.

Conclusion

With Ramadan 2025 beginning on March 2, the Muslim community in Singapore prepares for a month of fasting, prayer, and charity. The announcement of the Zakat Fitrah rates ensures that all Muslims can fulfill their religious obligations while supporting those in need.
