Mon Kee Café from Hong Kong to Open First Singapore Outlet in July

A beloved name in Hong Kong’s cha chaan teng scene, Mon Kee Café is making its highly anticipated debut in Singapore this July. Known for its elevated takes on traditional Hong Kong comfort food, the café will open as a food court stall at The Food Place in Raffles City Shopping Centre on July 4.

A Cult Favourite from Hong Kong

Mon Kee Café first opened its doors in 2016 in Wan Chai, quickly gaining popularity for its soft, silky scrambled egg rice dishes made with Japanese eggs. Within a year, the 24-seater eatery expanded to Quarry Bay, and the brand has since grown to include four standalone cafés in Hong Kong.

Unlike traditional cha chaan tengs that serve no-frills meals, Mon Kee made a name for itself by modernizing its menu while keeping prices affordable. Its signature dishes include char siew scrambled egg rice, luncheon meat macaroni in tomato soup, and the unique corned beef and peanut butter sandwich.

Raffles City Debut with a Local Twist

In Singapore, Mon Kee Café will not be opening as a standalone eatery but rather as a stall in the newly revamped food court operated by Food Republic. The space features a refreshed design with greenery, wooden accents, and a curated line-up of new food brands.

Mon Kee’s stall will feature the same bestsellers that have won fans over in Hong Kong, but with slight tweaks for the Singapore market. Notably, the café’s quirky “quartet sandwich” will be served in a bolo bun (pineapple bun) instead of the usual toast. This sweet-savory combo includes scrambled egg, peanut butter, lettuce, and either corned beef or luncheon meat.

Menu Highlights: Scrambled Eggs, Sandwiches and More

The star of the Mon Kee menu is its signature Char Siew Scrambled Egg Rice ($8.50), made with fluffy Japanese-style eggs, homemade sweet soy sauce, and house-roasted barbecued pork. According to co-founder Derek Choi, the dish is all about harmony: “It’s not just the char siew or the eggs. You need a bit of everything in one spoon for the perfect bite.”

Other egg rice options include:

  • Chicken Karaage Scrambled Egg Rice ($7.50)

  • Beef Scrambled Egg Rice ($9.00)

  • Siu Yuk Scrambled Egg Rice ($10.00)

  • Tomato Fried Egg Rice (vegetarian, $6.50)

For soup lovers, the Luncheon Meat Macaroni in Creamy Tomato Soup ($6.00) is a must-try. Featuring crispy cubes of luncheon meat and rich tomato gravy, this dish blends nostalgia with a gourmet twist.

The Bold Quartet Sandwich Returns

Perhaps the most unique item on the menu is the Bolo Bun Quartet Sandwich. For $8.50, diners can try the version with corned beef, while the luncheon meat variant is priced at $8.00. Both come with scrambled egg, lettuce and peanut butter—an unexpected but addictive combination.

Choi explained that the team spent a long time perfecting the mix of textures and flavors. “It’s unconventional, but once you try it, it makes sense,” he said. The sandwich, already a fan-favourite in Hong Kong, is expected to spark curiosity among Singapore foodies.

Beverage Options and Set Meals

Mon Kee’s Hong Kong-style milk tea will be available hot or iced, but only as part of a set meal. Add $3 to any main dish to enjoy a tea pairing, or opt for a $6 set that includes tea, scrambled eggs, and a mini bolo bun. The tea is brewed from a house blend of three Ceylon tea leaves, offering a rich, creamy finish.

A Collaboration with Local F&B Names

The Singapore venture is backed by Ken Loon, the founder of The Naked Finn and BurgerLabo. Loon, who has long collaborated with Mon Kee’s partners in other ventures, saw an opportunity to bring authentic Hong Kong comfort food to local diners.

His team will manage daily operations at the stall, and a trained chef from his Singapore team has already undergone intensive training in Hong Kong to replicate Mon Kee’s recipes with precision.

Why Singapore Was Chosen for Expansion

According to Choi, the decision to open in Singapore was a natural one. “We’ve worked with Food Republic in Hong Kong before, and when this opportunity came up, we knew we wanted to start here,” he said. “Singaporeans appreciate good food, and we trust Ken and his team to deliver.”

Mon Kee Café will join other exciting new food concepts at The Food Place, including Ju Xing Fish by Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant Ju Xing Home.
