Kranji Recycling Company Catches Fire Again – Third Major Incident Since 2018

A massive fire erupted at a recycling and waste management facility in Kranji this morning (Feb 19), marking the third reported incident at the same location since 2018. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the blaze at approximately 10:30 am and immediately launched a large-scale firefighting operation.

SCDF’s Firefighting Operation

Upon arrival at 11 Kranji Crescent, firefighters found the fire “well alight,” with waste materials inside the warehouse ablaze. The affected warehouse measures around 50m by 50m, making it a challenging fire to contain.

To tackle the inferno, SCDF deployed:

  • Six water jets
  • Four unmanned firefighting machines
  • A Combined Platform Ladder

By 7:00 pm, SCDF reported that the fire had been “largely extinguished,” but operations are expected to continue overnight to fully secure the site.

Injuries and Public Safety Measures

One person was rushed to the hospital for smoke inhalation and burn injuries.

Authorities also issued a public advisory through the SGSecure mobile app and mobile alerts via M1, StarHub, and SingTel. Commuters were urged to avoid the Kranji Crescent area due to heavy traffic congestion caused by the firefighting efforts.

Social Media Footage and Eyewitness Reports

The fire quickly gained attention on social media, with TikTok users sharing videos of thick black smoke billowing into the sky. Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC Member of Parliament Alex Yam also posted a video of the incident, warning residents to close their windows as the smoke drifts southeast.

A History of Fires at This Location

This is not the first time Wah & Hua Pte Ltd has caught fire:

  1. March 28, 2023 – A fire broke out in the company’s waste processing area, requiring three hours to extinguish. SCDF deployed 10 emergency vehicles and 50 personnel.
  2. 2018 Incident – A major fire engulfed the company’s warehouse, with SCDF deploying 70 firefighters and 22 firefighting appliances in an eight-hour-long operation.

Investigation and Future Safety Measures

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Given the facility’s history of repeated fires, questions are being raised about the fire safety protocols in place at the recycling and waste management company.

SCDF has yet to confirm if any new safety regulations will be introduced to prevent future incidents at the facility.

Conclusion

As investigations continue, businesses in the Kranji industrial area must remain vigilant about fire safety measures. This latest fire serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with waste management facilities and the importance of stringent safety protocols.
