In a world increasingly dominated by digital screens and online interactions, one ground-up initiative in Singapore is bringing people back to the joy of creating art – together and in person. Founded in August 2024 by Iffah Syafiqah Yusof, Senisini is a youth-led art platform that believes art should be for everyone.
Whether you’re an aspiring artist, a student looking for an outlet, or just someone curious to try your hand at doodling or video editing, Senisini offers open and welcoming creative spaces that are 100% free.
What Is Senisini?
Senisini, which means “art here” in Malay, is a youth-focused initiative that organises regular art jamming sessions in public spaces across Singapore. More than just an art club, it is a safe, non-judgmental space where young people gather to express themselves creatively – no experience needed.
Founded by Iffah, a full-time commercial analyst and passionate creative, Senisini started as a simple idea: to create spaces for art, connection, and community. The very first session took place at a charity festival and has since expanded to include film screenings, collaborative projects, and “show and tell” presentations.
A Free-For-All Platform for Creative Expression
What sets Senisini apart is its inclusive and spontaneous format. At a typical session, you’ll find people drawing with crayons, making collages out of newspaper clippings, or even creating video reels on their phones – all with materials provided by the organisers.
There are no rules and no expectations. Attendees often come alone but leave with new friends, connected by a shared moment of artistic expression. As Iffah puts it, “It doesn’t matter how good or bad you think you are. I want to make it possible for you to express yourself through art.”
These art jamming sessions have popped up in all sorts of places, including:
- Sultan Gate beside the Kampong Glam Ramadan Bazaar
- Haji Lane and Arab Street
- Void decks and shophouses
- Restaurants like Mahmud’s Tandoor
More Than Just Art: Building Community and Confidence
Beyond drawing and crafting, Senisini now hosts a growing range of creative activities, including:
- Film Clubs: Budding videographers and content creators come together to screen and discuss their short films or reels.
- Show & Tell Events: Participants present any form of artwork – from papier-mâché models to school projects – in pop-up galleries.
- Collaborations with NGOs: Events have supported causes such as Mercy Relief and humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
These gatherings not only encourage creativity but also promote camaraderie, emotional wellness, and social bonding among young people.
Why It Matters: Offline Connections in an Online World
Senisini reflects a growing trend among youths today – the craving for real-life, face-to-face experiences. In a post-pandemic society where loneliness and digital fatigue are rising, this movement taps into a deeper need: to be seen, to create, and to connect.
As Iffah observes, “When we sit down and create something together, we share a moment.”
Even though Senisini is still less than a year old, it has already built a vibrant community through fortnightly events and meaningful partnerships. The team – made up of full-time students and young working adults – continues to grow the initiative organically, powered by passion and purpose.
Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Senisini?
With plans for more “random” creative meetups such as drawing during museum visits or photography walks on skateboards, Iffah hopes to expand the ways in which people engage with art.
Her vision is clear: to normalise everyday creativity, break down the stigma that art is only for the talented, and provide a platform for everyone to make something meaningful.
As Senisini grows, so does its mission: to be a space where everyone – regardless of age, skill, or background – feels welcome to explore their creative side.
