The festive season in Singapore takes on a uniquely wild twist this year as Mandai Wildlife Reserve rolls out a series of Christmas-themed experiences designed not only for visitors, but also for the animals that call the reserve home. From tigers tearing into wreaths filled with treats to sun bears unwrapping carefully prepared “gifts”, Mandai’s parks are transforming into a joyful Festive Wild-erland that blends celebration, education and animal care.
This year’s festivities highlight how enrichment activities play a crucial role in animal welfare, while giving families a memorable way to celebrate the holidays together.
Festive Enrichments at Rainforest Wild Asia
One of the key highlights can be found at Rainforest Wild Asia, Mandai’s newest park. Here, keepers have created Christmas-inspired enrichments that encourage animals to explore, forage and stay mentally stimulated, all while keeping their natural behaviours in mind.
Malayan sun bears, Malayan tigers, axis deer and tortoises are treated to themed surprises such as wrapped treats, wreaths and decorated Christmas trees. These are not decorative props, but thoughtfully designed enrichments using safe materials and food items that promote movement, curiosity and problem-solving.
According to junior keeper Nur Sarah Ahman, Christmas is a time for togetherness, and the same philosophy applies to the animals. Sun bears, for instance, are given enrichment inspired by familiar festive icons, with treats wrapped like presents. The younger bear eagerly tears into the packages, while the older one approaches them more gently, offering visitors a glimpse into their individual personalities.
How Tigers Celebrate Christmas at Mandai
For visitors hoping to see something truly special, the Malayan tiger enrichment sessions are not to be missed. Keepers have prepared large wreaths made from water grass and Napier grass, with chunks of meat hidden within and suspended inside the habitat.
These enrichments are designed to engage the tigers physically, encouraging them to stretch, jump and use different muscle groups, including their powerful hind legs. Beyond the spectacle, the activity supports both physical health and mental engagement, reinforcing Mandai’s commitment to animal-centric care.
Keeper Julette Tay shared that celebrating the festive season with the animals feels deeply personal for the team, as many have cared for these animals for years. The joy of Christmas, she explained, comes from sharing these moments with both the animals and the visitors who come to learn about them.
Catch the Christmas Gift Moments Live
Visitors can witness these festive moments during scheduled keeper sharing sessions from Dec 24 to Dec 28. Tiger sessions run from 10.30am to 11am, while Malayan sun bear sessions take place from 4pm to 4.15pm, with additional sessions on Dec 24 and 25.
These sessions offer an educational layer to the experience, as keepers explain the purpose of enrichment and share insights into the animals’ behaviours, diets and personalities.
Seasonal Experiences Across Mandai Wildlife Reserve
Beyond Rainforest Wild Asia, the Christmas celebrations extend throughout Mandai Wildlife Reserve. Guests can enjoy special light shows at the Cavern, featuring magical aurora-like glows and snowfall-inspired effects that create an immersive festive atmosphere.
Santa’s Adventure Quest adds an interactive element to the visit, inviting families to search for hidden Christmas tokens along the Forest Treks. Participants stand a chance to win prizes worth up to S$70,000, making it an exciting activity for both children and adults.
Family-Friendly Fun at Singapore Zoo
At the Singapore Zoo, young visitors can take part in Join the Wild Patrol!, a special mission inspired by Zootopia 2. Children are invited to help familiar characters solve a mystery, blending storytelling with exploration.
The zoo also hosts keeper sharing sessions with fennec foxes at the Animal Behaviour and Enrichment Centre, as well as reptile feeding sessions at RepTopia. These activities combine festive fun with learning, making them ideal for families looking to enrich their holiday outings.
Christmas Magic at Bird Paradise
Over at Bird Paradise, Christmas takes on a wintry feel despite Singapore’s tropical climate. Visitors can photograph penguins diving through snowflake projections at the Ocean Network Express Penguin Cove, creating a whimsical contrast that delights guests of all ages.
The Penguin Christmas Hunt invites visitors to search for festive tokens around the park, with a special prize awaiting those who complete the challenge. Meanwhile, the Wings of the World presentation receives a holiday makeover, with birds delivering Santa’s mail and gifts during the show.
A Meaningful Way to Celebrate the Festive Season
Mandai Wildlife Reserve’s Christmas programmes go beyond decorations and entertainment. They highlight the importance of enrichment in animal care, while offering visitors a deeper appreciation of wildlife and conservation.
For families looking for a festive outing that is joyful, educational and heartwarming, Mandai’s Christmas celebrations offer a refreshing alternative to traditional holiday activities. Watching animals engage with their “Christmas gifts” is not only delightful, but also a reminder that the festive spirit can be shared across species, in thoughtful and meaningful ways.
